Learn How to Register to Vote in Your State


During our Your Voice, Your Vote campaign, we’re encouraging our customers and employees to make their voices heard by casting their vote on election day 2020. The first step is registering to vote. If you’re a first-time voter or you’ve moved since the last time you voted, you may need to register with your state. This process takes just a few minutes to complete. In some states, you can register online, while in others you’ll need to mail in your registration form or visit a government agency. In a few states, you can even register in-person on election day.

To help you take this crucial first step on the path to making your voice heard, we’ve compiled a list of voter registration information by state. You’ll find details on eligibility to register and how to register. Just scroll to your state to get started!

Alabama

To be eligible in Alabama, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Live in the State of Alabama.
  • Be at least 18 years of age on or before election day.
  • Not be barred from voting by reason of a disqualifying felony conviction.
  • Not have been judged “mentally incompetent” in a court of law.

How to register to vote in Alabama:

If you are eligible to vote in Alabama but you do not have a valid Alabama driver’s license of ID card, you can download and print the form here.

Alaska

To be eligible in Alaska, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Live in the State of Alaska and have been a resident of the state and of the election district that you seek to vote for at least 30 days before an election
  • Be at least 18 years of age or within 90 days of your 18th birthday
  • Not be a convicted felon involving moral turpitude, unless your voting rights have been restored
  • Not be registered to vote in another state unless you are willing to cancel your registration in that state

How to register in Alaska:

Online

If you are eligible to vote in Alaska and you have a valid Alaska driver’s license or state ID card, you can register to vote online. The information you enter must match the information the DMV has on file for you.

By Mail

If you are eligible to vote in Alaska but you do not have a valid Alaska driver’s license or state ID card, or the information you enter does not match what the DMV has on file, you can download and print the form here.

Arizona

To register in Arizona, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of Arizona and your county at least 29 days preceding the next election
  • Be 18 years old on or before the next general election
  • Be able to write your name or mark, unless prevented from so doing by physical disability
  • Not have been convicted of treason or a felony (or have had your civil rights restored)
  • Not currently be declared an incapacitated person by a court

How to register in Arizona:

Online

If you are eligible to vote in Arizona and you have a valid Arizona Driver’s License and/or an Arizona non-operating I.D. card issued by the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD), you can register to vote online.

By Mail

You can print off a form online (PDF) or request that a registration form be mailed to you from your County Recorder. After completing the voter registration form, mail it to your county recorder’s office.

In Person

You can visit your County Recorder’s Office and fill out a registration form in person.

Arkansas

To register in Arkansas, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Live in Arkansas at the address in Box 2 on the application
  • Be at least 18 years old before the next election
  • Not be a convicted felon (or have completely discharged your sentence or been pardoned)
  • Not claim the right to vote in any other jurisdiction
  • Not previously be judged mentally incompetent by a court of competent jurisdiction

To register in California, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of California
  • Be at least 18 years of age at the time of the next election
  • Not be imprisoned or on parole for the conviction of a felony
  • Not currently be judged mentally incompetent by a court of law

How to register in California:

If you are eligible to vote in California, you can register to vote online.

In Person

You can choose to pick up a paper voter registration application at any Department of Motor Vehicles field office, and many post offices, public libraries, and government offices, or request one from your county elections office.

By Mail

Request to receive a voter registration application by mail by calling the toll-free Voter Hotline at (800) 345-VOTE (8683).

Same-Day Registration

If you need to register or re-register within 14 days of Election Day, you can register and cast your vote at the same time in California. Learn more here.

Colorado

To register to vote in Colorado, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of Colorado 22 days prior to Election Day
  • Be 18 years old on or before Election Day
  • Not be serving a sentence of detention, confinement

How to register in Colorado:

If you are eligible to vote in Colorado and have a valid Colorado driver’s license or ID card, you can register to vote online.

In Person

You can register in person at the following locations:

  • A Colorado Department of Motor Vehicle office when you apply for a driver’s license, or when updating your driver’s license information
  • Offices that provide public assistance, including offices that provide state funded programs primarily engaged in providing services to person with disabilities
  • Recruitment offices of the armed forces of the United States
  • Any federal, state, or local government office or any nongovernment office that chooses to provide voter registration service or applications
  • A voter service and polling center
  • A voter registration drive

Connecticut

To register in Connecticut, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of Connecticut and of the town in which you wish to vote
  • Be 17 years old. 17-year-olds who will turn 18 on or before Election Day, may participate in the general primary.
  • Have completed confinement and parole if previously convicted of a felony, and have had your voting rights restored by Registrars of Voters

Delaware

To register to vote in Delaware, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a permanent resident of Delaware
  • Be at least 18 years old on the date of the next general election
  • Not be mentally incompetent
  • If you are a felon, you are eligible to vote as long as you have served your sentence (including parole) and your convictions were not for disqualifying felonies: murder and manslaughter (except vehicular homicide), sexual offenses, or crimes against public administration involving bribery or improper influence

To register to vote in D.C., you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a District of Columbia resident at least 30 days preceding the next election
  • Be at least 18 years old on or preceding the next general election
  • Not be in prison for a felony conviction
  • Not have been judged legally incompetent by a court of law
  • Not claim the right to vote anywhere outside DC

Florida

To register in Florida, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a legal resident of both the State of Florida and of the county in which you seek to be registered
  • Be 18 years old (you may pre‑register if you are at least 16)
  • Not be adjudicated mentally incapacitated with respect to voting in Florida or any other State, or If you have, you must first have your voting rights restored
  • Not be a convicted felon, or if you are, you must first have your civil rights restored if they were taken away
  • Swear or affirm the following: “I will protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Florida, that I am qualified to register as an elector under the Constitution and laws of the State of Florida, and that all information in this application is true.”

How to register in Florida:

If you are eligible to vote and you have a valid Florida driver’s license or ID card, you can register to vote online.

In Person

You can choose to register in person at any county Supervisor of Elections office, local library, or any entity authorized by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to issue fishing, hunting, or trapping permits. The form contains detailed information as to how to submit the form to your county Supervisor of Elections. If you are a military or overseas U.S. citizen, you may register to vote and request a vote-by-mail ballot at the same time by using the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA). You can also register in person at these locations:

  • Florida driver’s license office. You also have the option to submit voter registration information online when you renew your driver’s license online through the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles’ online renewal system. For more information, visit com.

Georgia

To register in Georgia, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a legal resident of Georgia and of the county in which you want to vote
  • Be at least 18 years old within six months after the day of registration, and be 18 years old to vote
  • Not be serving a sentence for having been convicted of a felony involving moral turpitude
  • Not have been judicially determined to be mentally incompetent, unless the disability has been removed

To register in Hawaii, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of the State of Hawaii
  • Be at least 16 years old (you must be 18 years old by election day in order to vote)
  • Not be incarcerated for a felony conviction
  • Not be adjudicated by a court as “non compos mentis”

To register in Idaho, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Have resided in Idaho and in the county for 30 days prior to the day of election
  • Not be serving a sentence of imprisonment for a felony. Your voting rights are restored once you have completed your sentence, probation, and parole.

To register in Illinois, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of Illinois and of your election precinct at least 30 days before the next election
  • Be at least 18 years old on or before the next election
  • Cannot be serving a sentence of confinement in any penal institution as a result of conviction of any crime
  • Not claim the right to vote anywhere else

Kansas

To register in Kansas, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of Kansas
  • Be 18 by the next election
  • Have completed the terms of your sentence if convicted of a felony and received a certificate of discharge; a person serving a sentence for a felony conviction is ineligible to vote
  • Not claim the right to vote in any other location or under any other name

To register in Kentucky, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States

  • Be a resident of the county for at least 28 days prior to the election date
  • Be 18 years of age on or before the next general election
  • Not be a convicted felon or if you have been convicted of a felony, your civil rights must have been restored by executive pardon
  • Not have been judged “mentally incompetent” in a court of law
  • Not claim the right to vote anywhere outside Kentucky

Louisiana

To register in Louisiana, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of Louisiana (Residence address must be address where you claim homestead exemption, if any, except for a resident in a nursing home or veteran’s home who may select to use the address of the nursing home or veterans’ home or the home where he has a homestead exemption. A college student may elect to use his home address or his address while away at school.)
  • Be at least 17 years old (16 years old if registering in person at the Registrar of Voters Office or at the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles), and be 18 years old prior to the next election to vote
  • Not currently be under an order of imprisonment for conviction of a felony. (If you are under an order but have not been incarcerated within the last five years, you ARE eligible to vote unless your conviction was for election fraud.)
  • Not currently be under a judgment of interdiction for mental incompetence

  • Be at least 16 years old (must be 18 years old to vote on Election Day)
  • Not have been convicted of corrupt practices in respect to elections
  • Not be under guardianship with respect to voting
  • Not be currently incarcerated for a felony conviction

  • Not be confined in a jail or prison after being convicted and sentenced

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of Minnesota for 20 days before the next election
  • Maintain residence at the address given on the registration form
  • Be at least 18 years old on Election Day
  • If previously convicted of a felony, have completed or been discharged from your sentence
  • Not be under a court‑ordered guardianship in which the right to vote has been revoked
  • Not be found by a court to be legally incompetent to vote

To register in Mississippi, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Have lived in Mississippi and in your county (and city, if applicable) 30 days before the election in which you want to vote
  • Be 18 years old by the time of the general election in which you want to vote
  • Not have been convicted in a Mississippi court of voter fraud, arson, armed robbery, bigamy, bribery, carjacking, embezzlement, extortion, felony bad check, felony shoplifting, forgery, larceny, murder, obtaining money or goods under false pretense, perjury, rape, receiving stolen property, robbery, statutory rape, theft, timber larceny, larceny under lease or rental agreement, or unlawful taking of motor vehicle (unless having been pardoned, had rights of citizenship restored by the Governor or had suffrage restored by the Legislature)
  • Not have been declared mentally incompetent by a court

To register in Missouri, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of Missouri
  • Be at least 17‑1/2 years of age (you must be 18 to vote)
  • Not be on probation or parole after conviction of a felony, until finally discharged from such probation or parole
  • Not be convicted of a felony or misdemeanor connected with the right of suffrage
  • Not be adjudged incapacitated by any court of law
  • Not be confined under a sentence

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be at least 18 years old on or before the election
  • Be a resident of Montana and of the county in which you want to vote for at least 30 days before the next election
  • Not be in a penal institution for a felony conviction
  • Not currently be determined by a court to be of unsound mind

Nebraska

To register in Nebraska, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of Nebraska and of the county where you are registering; if you move to another county, you must re-register
  • Be at least 18 years of age or will be 18 years of age on or before the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November
  • Not have been convicted of a felony, either in Nebraska or another state or in federal court; you cannot register to vote until two years after the completion of your sentence including any probation or parole term
  • Not have been officially found to be mentally incompetent

  • Not currently be serving a term of imprisonment for a felony conviction
  • Not be determined by a court of law to be mentally incompetent
  • Claim no other place as your legal residence

New Hampshire

To register in New Hampshire, you must:

  • Be a resident
  • Be 18 years of age or older on the day of the next election
  • Be a United States citizen

There is no minimum period of time you are required to have lived in the state before being allowed to register. You may register as soon as you move into your new community.

How to register in New Hampshire:

You can also register in person at your town or city clerk’s office. You can also request an absentee voter registration form be mailed to you by contacting your town or city clerk’s office.

Register to Vote on Election Day

New Jersey

To register in New Jersey, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be at least 17 years old (you must be 18 to vote)
  • Be a resident of the State and county 30 days before the election
  • Not be serving a sentence or on parole or probation as the result of a conviction of any indictable offense under the laws of this or another state or of the United States

New Mexico

To register in New Mexico, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of the State of New Mexico
  • Be 18 years of age at the time of the next election
  • Not have been denied the right to vote by a court of law by reason of mental incapacity

North Dakota

In order to vote in North Dakota, you must be:

  • A citizen of the United States
  • Eighteen years or older on the day of election
  • A resident of North Dakota
  • A resident in the precinct at least thirty days immediately preceding any election
  • Able to provide a North Dakota driver’s license, nondriver ID, or tribal ID that includes your current residential address and date of birth. (If an individual’s valid form of identification does not include all the information required in subsection 2 of NDCC §16.1-01-04.1, or the information is not current, the identification must be supplemented by presenting any of the documents as outlined in subsection 3 of NDCC § 16.1-01-04.1.)])

To register in Ohio, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States

  • Not be currently incarcerated (in jail or prison) for a felony conviction. If you are an ex-felon and not currently incarcerated, you are eligible to vote in Ohio but you MUST re-register.

  • Be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the State of Oklahoma
  • Be 18 years old on or before the date of the next election
  • Be a “bona fide” resident of the State of Oklahoma (A person is a “bona fide” resident of the State of Oklahoma if he or she has an “honest intent to make a place one’s residence or domicile, a conscious decision to make a location an individual’s home.”)
  • Have not been convicted of a felony and not completed the sentence including any term of incarceration, parole or supervision, or probation
  • Not now be under judgment as an incapacitated person, or a partially incapacitated person prohibited

  • Be a citizen of the United States at least one month before the next election

  • Not be incarcerated after conviction for a felony (your voting rights are restored immediately after incarceration)

Rhode Island allows for same day voter registration for the Presidential Election only. You will not be able to vote in any state, local, or other federal races. You can only register and vote on Election Day at the location designated by your local board of canvassers.
